We’ve already seen the arrival of apple’s just-leaked patents, this one related to one of apple’s most popular accessories, and the seemingly humble iPhone case may soon be getting some incredible upgrades.
The patent indicates that Apple plans to use high-tech materials on the new case, which the company describes as deformable and touch-sensitive. The document, released by Apple, details how the case includes a “touch area” that controls iPhone functions. The back of the case has a quantum tunneling material that can “detect changes in electrical properties in response to distortions caused by the touch force input by the user,” in other words, it is touch-sensitive.
Apple’s new Back Tap assist gives an idea of how the phone case works — allowing users to access various features by double-clicking or three times on the Back of the phone. But Apple’s patent shows that quantum tunneling materials are more sensitive and advanced.
On the iPhone case side, its new MagSafe feature has been a constant source of concern, from magnets damaging the iPhone 12 Pro leather case to the issue of wallet pendants coming off. But if the iPhone 12 Pro Max case can add touch to the iPhone itself, Apple could be the winner in the near future.
