Can you use Apple AirTags to track children and pets?

Apple unveiled its new AirTag tracker at its spring event earlier this week, which helps you keep track of your keys, wallets, backpacks and more. The Airtag has two distinct advantages over its competitors, Tile and Chipolo. It has strong privacy protection features to prevent data interception and abuse.

Can you track pets? The answer is – yes! While Apple doesn’t necessarily recommend that you do this, we think it could be one of the main selling points of AirTag. You can check the location of your dog or cat on a compatible device by opening Find My App. Dog collar manufacturers are already selling accessories that work with AirTags. They offer classic pet collars, V-button collars, AirTags Case etc.

If your dog is not nearby and cannot be found, you can place the Airtag on your dog in “Lost Mode”. You will then be notified when the Airtag is in range or is located by the Find My network. However, Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing, made it clear that AirTag is designed to track objects, not pets.

Apple has also been keeping anti-tracking features in its new AirTag, because even if someone wanted to unwittingly track someone else, they wouldn’t get Apple’s support. Company executives explained that users running iOS 14.5 or later on iPhone 11 and later will receive an “Airtag has been found with you” notification, just in case someone slips an Airtag into your backpack to track you.
